How an Inspiron got its groove back

Many years ago I bought a second-hand Dell Inspiron 5100 whose battery seemed to drain within minutes after being off the adapter. About two years ago, the battery stopped working altogether. As soon as I removed the power adapter, the laptop shut off. Now either the laptop or the battery has decided (yes, on its own) to work again. Since I’ve started running Ubuntu on this old tanker, battery life has improved. I can run this laptop – from which I’m now typing this post – for an hour or two before the battery indicator starts warning me it needs more juice. Ubuntu saved this old Dell Inspiron from extinction. I think it’s got its groove back! Any other computer resurrection stories out there? Weird? Strange? Odd? Even explainable? Let’s hear them.
